There is a certain store in the mall that is known for their fabulous smelling body butters and I’ve always adored them-mostly because they smell good enough to eat. I also liked that they used fair trade products and seemed “natural”. Looking more throughly into the safety of cosmetics, I decided to look at the ingredients list of my beloved body butter.
To my dismay, this products I considered safe was loaded with artificial fragrances and Propyl Parabens. Since I’ve been on this kick of creating all of my own beauty products like this homemade face lotion and this diaper rash stick, I decided to create my own body butter recipe. And guess what I discovered…it’s SUPER simple. I can’t wait to whip up a batch for friends birthdays and as holiday gifts.
I chose to use lemon essential oil for this recipe because I’ve always love citrus as a scent; it’s so fresh and invigorating. I love diffusing lemon essential oil throughout my house in the morning! It’s such a pick-me up! It is very very important to make sure you use therapeutic grade essential oils when you diffuse them or put them on your skin in a homemade beauty products. 1/4 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
just shy of a 1/4 cup sweet almond oil
*10 drop lemon essential oils (grapefruit, orange or lime would work here as well)
- Place a glass or metal bowl over the top of a pot of boiling water-double boiler style
- Add your cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil and almond oil to the bowl and allow to completely melt
- Place in the fridge for a couple of hours until firm
- Using a stand mixer-like this one or a hand mixer- like this one, whip the butter with the essential oil until it is fluffy liked whipped cream
*Citrus oils are known to cause photosensitivity so it is wise to use extreme caution when used on the skin prior to sun exposure. NEVER use this lotion on your face. You can read more about that here. I tested this recipe by rubbing it all over my legs and sitting out in the direct sun for over an hour. I had no reaction but this does not mean you won’t. This is a wonderful “winter/spring” recipe when you won’t be getting sun on your body. In the summer I recommend switching the scent to something “sun safe” like lavender.
**This body butter has a shelf like of about 6 months on the conservative side. However you may notice in the warm weather the body butter will melt down a bit. If you are making this recipe in the summer months try cutting down on the sweet almond oil for a firmer lotion.
